The modern day Highway 289 roughly follows the North/South Shawnee Trail that became one of the great cattle drive trails between Texas, Missouri and Kansas.  In 1876, a rancher by the name of J.R. Potts, established Pottsboro on his own land and gave right of way access to the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad could extend westward from Denison and the Pottsboro Real Estate market began.  About 8 years later an artesian well was discovered that still flows today. Seven years later, the first post office was built and the town's name was shortened from the original Pottsborough to today's Pottsboro. 

In 1929, Pottsboro was the site of the county's first oil well. Beginning in the 1940s, Grayson County became the site of several military bases. In 1941 the US Air Corp established Perrin Field just outside of Pottsboro.  In 1952 this became a permanent was designated as Perrin Air Force Base.
